Hispanic are different from one generation to the
next generation. So be sensative because not all Hispanics speak
spanish you want to know how they differ. There are first, second
and third generation Hispanics living in America today. You want
to know how each generation is unique.
One generation is in any way superior to the other,
they are simply different. It may seem as if some are doing better
but they are just different. 1st generation Hispanics are those
that are in a different country than the one they were born in.
In the United States most of the Hispanics come from Mexico, that
is not a secret. Others also come from Central America, Cuba, El
Salvador just to name a couple more countries. Family is important
in this generation. The godfather is a very 1st generation movie.
2nd generation Hispanics are those whose parents
were born in another country but now they are here in the United
States but they still hold on to their parents culture. For example
these Hispanics may be bilingual speakers. They speak spanish at
home with family but at work they speak english.
3rd generation Hispanics are those that have assimilated
into the american culture. They speak english and do not speak any
spanish. They grew up in the english culture and have no desire
to relate to spanish speaking Hispanics. They also are moving into
a different way of life. Their parents worked hard all their lives
and these folks are looking for office jobs. You can tell when you
have met a 3rd generation Hispanic because most live in an Anglo
environment.
Since Hispanics are relational people see if you
can relate to the ones you already know. See if you can tell if
they are first, second or third generation Hispanic. Ask them about
their family background, you can pick up on them fairly quickly
by doing so.
